Discover the charm of Hamburg on this free walking tour of the city centre. Learn all about its history from pirates to World War II bombardments as you explore its most important monuments.
Free Walking Tour of Hamburg
The tour meets in the Hamburg Town Hall Square - beginning our free tour by getting to know the town hall itself - a neo-renaissance building with more than 640 rooms. As we wander through the narrow Hamburg streets, we will reveal the details of operation Gomorra, the bombardment of the city during the Second World War.
One of Hamburg's most notable characteristics is the large number of urban canals which cross the metropolis known as the "City of Rivers". We'll walk along the banks of the river Elba to see Germany's largest port, discovering the exciting story of the pirate Störtebeker.
Jumping into the Middle Ages, we will dive into the details of the Hanseatic League as we visit Sant Petri, Hamburg's medieval church. We wil also pass through one of the most beautiful areas of the city: Deichstrasse - and a collection of narrow streets from the 17th century, making them the oldest streets in Hamburg, which survived the great fire which destroyed a large part of the city in 1842.
To finish our guided tour we will visit the church of St. Nicholas and through the main streets which leave the Hamburg port. The tour will finish in the HafenCity area, on Am Sandtorkai street on the corner with Kehrwiedersteg.
