Tour Details

What does Bolivia taste like? To find out, we'll meet at Plaza Emilio Villanueva, in front of the Palacio Consistorial, where our guide will welcome the group and give us some cultural context about the city before we set off on our food tour of La Paz.

We'll start on foot, discovering several traditional street stalls around the plaza. We'll meet the vendors and learn about their role in daily life, while getting to know the key ingredients and staple products of Bolivian cuisine. Then it's time to put theory into practice with the first tasting of the route: a salteña, one of the most iconic foods in the country, a juicy empanada filled with meat and spices. A vegetarian version is also available.

We'll continue strolling around Plaza Emilio Villanueva toward a relleno de papas stall, a traditional snack of potato stuffed with seasoned, fried meat. Your mouth will be watering! This little bite was also featured on the popular Netflix series Street Food Latin America. After that irresistible stop, we'll head to a local market to try a refreshing tumbo juice, a drink made with fresh fruit and this native Andean fruit from Bolivia.

Refreshed and ready, we'll hop on the teleférico, La Paz's main public transport system, for a ride up to El Alto with unique views along the way. Once there, we'll continue the food experience with a plate of pasta con maní, a local dish of fried noodles in peanut sauce, served with either meat or egg.

We'll also explore an El Alto market, taking in the different stalls, the fresh and organic produce used in Bolivian cooking, and the lively rhythm of daily buying, selling, and working life. Then we'll take the teleférico back down to Plaza Sucre, a well-known square in La Paz, home to the famous San Pedro prison.

We'll talk about the history of this penitentiary and the cultural context behind the gastronomy. To end the experience on a sweet note, we'll wrap up this 2.5-hour La Paz food tour at a stall in Plaza Sucre with a taste of its iconic cinnamon ice cream.
