Tour of Malé & Villimale

  • 7 hours

If you don't want to miss anything on your trip to the Maldives, enjoy a guided tour of Malé plus a tour of the island of Villimale. The best way to see what life is like for locals!

Tour of Malé & Villimale

We'll meet at the port in Malé at 10 am and we'll have a quick walk around, heading towards the oldest school in the city. Impressively, Malé has a literacy rate of 98%.

After seeing the school, we'll head to the Malé Friday Mosque. This is the second largest mosque on the island, and as we admire its façade and surroundings, our expert guide will tell you about the famous people who have been buried here.

Next, we'll make our way to the Royal Garden Café to try a traditional black tea. Then, we'll admire the 3rd November Memorial- do you know who this monument honours?

Our next stop will be at to Sultan Park, these days known as Rasrani Park. This park is home to the National Museum, and if you so wish, you can go inside and learn about the country's history (entrance not included).

We'll start heading back to the port, stopping outside the Islamic Centre, where we'll learn about the importance of this religion in Malé. Then, we'll pass by the iconic Independence Square, also known as Jumhooree Maidhaan. This is the political centre of the city and is steeped with history; you're sure to learn something new!

Afterwards, we'll head to a fish market where you'll rub shoulders with locals and learn about the way of life on this island. Plus, we'll take a break of approximately one hour where you can grab some lunch in one of the local restaurants (not included).

With your energy replenished, we'll take a taxi to the ferry terminal and from there we'll board a boat and sail to the island of Villimale. This island, which used to be used as a prison, is one of the best spots to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

We'll wander along for about an hour, learning about the lifestyle on this island, which is very different from the city. Plus, we'll meet members of a local NGO, Save the Beach, who'll explain about their efforts to keep the island and ocean clean.

Then, we'll go to a local café to enjoy a traditional hedika; a selection of pastries and black tea. After this delicious snack, we'll return to the ferry and make our way back to Malé, where we'll arrive at about 5 pm.
