Incredible fortresses, medieval markets and majestic libraries come together, portraying the interesting history of Newcastle. Discover its legacy with this guided walking tour!
Walking Tour of Newcastle
At the chosen time, we'll start this walking tour around the historical centre of Newcastle next to the iconic Black Gate. This tower, dating back to medieval times, stands tall next to Newcastle Castle, the most iconic building in the city. Do you know why there are only certain remains of this defensive stronghold? Do you know the important role the Romans played in this city? And what about the English civil wars in the 17th century? You'll find all of this out and more as we walk around this neighbourhood, home to one of the most representative fortresses in the North of England.
We'll continue our guided walking tour alongside the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas. This 6th-century temple holds clues to the city's medieval past... but we don't want to give too much away before the tour! Next, we'll head to Bigg Market, one of the most popular streets in the city, and the root of its unusual spelling also dates back to the Middle Ages.
The next stop on our guided walking tour of Newcastle is at one of the city's cultural hubs: the Literary and Philosophical Society Library, known affectionately as the Lit & Phil Library. With free entrance, we'll head inside this "temple of knowledge" and observe the hundreds of books from different historical periods and branches of knowledge. This is a must-see when visiting Newcastle!
We'll bring our tour to an end outside Newcastle Castle. If you have time, we recommend visiting this (tickets not included, but you can buy them here); it's a fabulous way of discovering England's turbulent past!
