Did you know that Riga's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Discover its charm on this free walking tour, the best way to explore the Pearl of the Baltic.
Old Riga Free Walking Tour Itinerary
Your free walking tour of Old Riga will begin at 10 am in front of St Peter's Church, which dates back to the early 13th century and is one of the main buildings in the iconic Ratslaukums, or Town Hall Square. What better place to begin your discovery of the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with fascinating history?
Not far from the church, you'll find the striking façade of the House of the Blackheads, one of the most emblematic buildings of the Latvian capital. What does its name mean? Your guide will reveal all while you admire the details of its architecture. From here, you'll stroll over to Riga Cathedral, one of the most recognisable landmarks in the entire country, considered to be the largest Medieval church in the Baltic states.
You'll also visit the Three Brothers, a complex of three houses that form the oldest dwellings in the city. Each building showcases a different architectural style, representing Riga's artistic heritage over the years. Next, you'll pass under the Swedish Gate, the only remaining entrance through the old city walls, to admire the Pulvertornis, or Powder Tower, a striking red brick building that was part of Riga's historic defensive system.
Continuing on your free walking tour around Riga's Old Town, you'll pass by the Cat House - so named for two cat sculptures on its roof - and the Peitav Synagogue, the only one in Riga to have survived the Holocaust.
Your fascinating guided tour will come to an end by the statue of the Town Musicians of Bremen, a gift from the German city, at around 11:45 am.
