Matadero Franklin Market Free Tour
At 3:30 pm, we will meet up at the Franklin metro station to and head to what was once the old slaughterhouse in Santiago now converted into a bustling market selling top-quality ingredients. The origins of this building date back to 1847, when the emerging Franklin neighborhood began to take shape.
In the vicinity of the slaughterhouse, we will encounter the "conventillos" (tenements) and hear all about their function. In the 1970s, the prosperity of the slaughterhouse came to an end with its move to another sector of Santiago de Chile. During the free tour, we will visit the old facilities which today is a lively market for fish, vegetables, meat, and many other fresh products. This is a genuine treat for your senses!
After visiting the Franklin Slaughterhouse Market, we will head to the Huemul I neighborhood and its neighbors Huemul II and Huemul III, three residential areas of working-class origin. We will stop in front of two striking buildings: the Huemul Theatre and the Caja de Ahorros bank. This last building was built at the beginning of the 20th century with the best materials and still exudes the elegance and splendor of that era!
Strolling around the Huemul neighborhood we will find several "galpones", street stalls selling everything including antiques, furniture, and technology. We will also take the opportunity to talk about the haunted sanatorium in the area, which conceals a terrifying legend.
To finish the free tour, we will go to Vítor Jara Park, where we will briefly explain the legacy of this author in Chilean folklore before bidding farewell at around 6 pm.
It is not possible to take the free tour of the Matadero Franklin Market if you are a group of more than 6 people. In this case, we recommend booking a private tour of Santiago.
