Discover Valparaiso from a new perspective, heading off the beaten track to explore some of the Chilean city's most exciting alternative sights on this free walking tour.
Valparaiso Free Alternative Tour Itinerary
On the morning of your free tour, meet your guide in Plaza Sotomayor, near Valparaiso's port area, ready to begin your route around the Chilean city's most unforgettable alternative sights.
First, get to know the history and significance of the National Council of Culture and the Arts, located on the square from which your tour departs. You'll then stroll towards Barrio Puerto, the port neighbourhood of the city - did you know this was one of the richest seaports in the world? You wouldn't think it now, as this area of the city has been in decline for the past hundred years. As you explore the striking contrasts of Valparaiso's social reality with its historical Golden Age, your guide will reveal more interesting local facts to you... from the residents' favourite type of bread to the local football team fans' preferred dive bar!
Head further off the beaten path next, reaching Plaza Echaurren, where you'll delve deeper into Valparaiso's foodie traditions. Climb on board a trolleybus, joining the city's locals on their daily commute, and following the same route that Che Guevara took on arrival in the city in the "Motorcycle Diaries" film. Take in the vibrant atmosphere of this hilly neighbourhood: it may be poor, but it's certainly rich in history, art and pride.
Atop one of Valparaiso's many hills, you'll be left speechless by the spectacular colourful view over the bay and over neighbouring cities. Learn about some of the city's most significant figures - Pablo Neruda, Augusto Pinochet and Salvador Allende - and how their stories entwine with the history of Chile, as you visit the site of a chilling former prison.
The final part of your alternative walking tour of Valparaiso will take you to the oldest Protestant cemetery in Latin America. Around this area you'll discover the politically-charged street art offering a critique of current affairs, religion and capitalism.
Your tour will end back in Plaza Sotomayor, where you'll be ready to continue exploring the city at your own pace.
