A visit to Madrid is not complete without a trip to the Prado Museum—a cultural gem showcasing a vast collection of European art from some of the most celebrated artists in history, including Goya, Rafael, Velásquez, Bosch and El Greco.

The history of the Prado Museum

The neoclassical building which is now the Prado Museum was designed in 1785, under the orders of King Charles III. Due to external political factors, the museum would not officially open to visitors until 1819. 

At the time of opening, the Prado housed approximately 300 works of art. Since then, the collection has grown to include nearly 9,000 paintings, over 700 sculptures, and much more!

Highlights

Within this vast collection of art are a number of works which you can't miss! Francisco Goya's Saturn, Hieronymous Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, Diego Velásquez's Las Meninas are amongst the most significant pieces in the museum.

Public transport

The Prado is located just a short walk from Atocha station and Cibeles Palace. Located in central Madrid, you can get to the museum via bus, metro or train. If you'd prefer to make your way in a private car, there are also a number of car parks in the area!
