Sunday in Madrid – Unique Ideas for this Weekend

Life in the capital can be hectic on Mondays, monotonous on Wednesdays, exciting on Fridays, last late into the night on Saturdays, and simply… perfect on Sundays. This city seems to have been built for long, sunny weekend days in a park or on a bar terrace. Find out what to do this Sunday in Madrid.
At Civitatis, we write about destinations all over the world, but Madrid is our home. That means we know what we’re talking about when we make a list of activities to finish the week in the best possible way. Whether you’re visiting or living here, they say that it’s impossible to get bored in Madrid, and we want to prove it to you with various itineraries for all tastes and budgets. What are you waiting for? Get up off the sofa and make the most of your Sunday!
Picnic at Capricho Park
One of the least-known is also one of the most beautiful parks in Madrid. Built between 1787 and 1839, this incredible 14-hectare natural space is the only romance-style garden in the city. Parque del Capricho’s varied and esoteric attractions include its lake, labyrinth, the Temple of Bacchus, and its best-kept secret: a bunker from the Civil War.

Do Some Shopping at Las Rozas Village
Madrid is also a shopper’s paradise, and even though this task is a bit more complicated on Sundays, it’s true that Madrid’s business hours are more flexible than those of other Spanish cities. So, we recommend a day out visiting the capital’s most famous outlet: Las Rozas Village. You’ll find more than 100 trendy and exclusive boutiques!

Las Rozas is about 30 minutes from Madrid. You can either get there on your own or book a shopping tour to Las Rozas Village that includes a VIP card with special discounts on national and international brands.
See the Expositions at the Matadero
While it may sound gruesome, one of the more hip (and picturesque) exposition spaces is at the old Madrid slaughterhouse (matadero in Spanish). This historic building has been converted into a large Madrid Río exhibition center where all artists have a place. The theme of the exhibitions is usually contemporary, assertive, and groundbreaking—always worth a visit!
Sundays are an excellent day to visit the Matadero de Madrid and enjoy its goings-on in cinema, theater, visual, and other arts.

The exhibitions in the Matadero change often, so we recommend checking out the program on the official website.
Stroll Through El Rastro Sunday Market
A timeless classic. For many years, the perfect plan in Madrid on a Sunday has been to head to the Rastro for some window shopping (even though it’s outdoors). At this open-air market, you can find literally everything: furniture, antiques, second-hand clothes, collectible films, prints by local artists, screwdrivers… The four hundred years of history of El Rastro have made this market in La Latina an essential stop on any Madrid itinerary.

We recommend you head there first thing in the morning to beat the crowds and get the bargains!
Visit the Village of Chinchón this Weekend
What if your plan for what to do this Sunday in Madrid was outside the city? If you prefer to get away from the hustle and bustle of the capital and get to know some of the charming villages on the outskirts, we recommend none less than the most beautiful town in Madrid: Chinchón. Strolling through this medieval town is like traveling back in time. Admire the traditional architecture at Plaza Mayor, explore the Castillo de los Condes, and learn the fascinating history of Chinchón.

Ride the Scenic Cable Car
The best way to enjoy a city as picturesque as Madrid is from above! A cable car ride is a perfect plan for a Sunday, as it offers unique views, dreamy photographs, and, without a doubt, an unforgettable memory of the capital.

The Madrid Cable Car flies over Parque del Oeste on the ten-minute journey from its origin in Casa de Campo.
Discover the hidden side of Madrid
Taking a tour to explore some lesser-known places in the capital is also ideal for a Sunday in Madrid. Depending on your tastes and hobbies, you can learn about the history of Madrid, find out about the city’s most illustrious figures, or go on a theatrical tour. The options are nearly endless.

We especially recommend a Spanish Civil War Tour, a Masonic Madrid Tour, or a Madrid Ghost Tour… if you dare.
Relax at the Hammam Al Andalus
Relive the oriental charm of the Arabian capital, Al Andaulus, right in the heart of Madrid. This is totally possible thanks to the Arab Hammam baths, which are located in an old hundreds-year-old bath chamber. The setting and products used will transport you directly to the Al Andalus Empire!

The Experience in the Hammam Al Ándalus offers various options and specialized rooms, such as the Turkish bath and pools with different temperatures. Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to pamper yourself this Sunday in Madrid!
