Free Walking Tour of Asunción
Meet your free walking tour guide in front of the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes, or the National Pantheon of the Heroes, an impressive architectural jewel and one of Paraguay's national monuments. Construction began in 1863, but was halted for over 70 years following the Paraguayan War of the Triple Alliance against Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Thankfully, the building was eventually completed in the 1930s and is to this day an example of the country's great artistic and cultural heritage.
Continue your walking tour, heading on to the Palacio de los López, the seat of the Paraguayan government and one of the capital's most iconic monuments. Built in the mid-19th century, its palatial Neoclassical-style façade is truly beautiful.
You'll then have the opportunity to admire Asunción's historic Opera House, one of the city's most important cultural centres, and the train station, considered a symbol of the industrial progress made in Paraguay in the 19th century.
This tour will also take you to see the Casa de la Independencia, a house built in 1772 that has become a monument of great historical significance as the site of the 1811 declaration of Paraguayan independence; the Asunción Cathedral and the Escalinata de Antequera, a set of steps that lead up to the highest point in the city.
