At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de la Trinidad and, once we're all together, we'll begin this free tour of the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, where we'll also explore the iconic neighborhood of Getsemaní. Let's go!
We'll start our tour by walking along the colorful streets of Getsemaní, an area that perfectly reflects the vibrant life of Cartagena de Indias. We'll admire its street art, dive into its local ambience and discuss how this neighborhood has transformed throughout history. We'll stroll along the Callejón Ancho and the Calle Lomba, where we'll honor the Colombian writer and Nobel Prize in Literature winner Gabriel García Márquez.
Afterward, we'll head to the Castillo de San Felipe de Bajaras. Did you know that this imposing fortress is popularly known as the Guardian of Cartagena? This is owed to its construction, which began in 1537 and finished in 1657 and was carried out on the San Lázaro Hill as a defensive barrier against English attacks on the Spanish during the colonial period.
Over the 2.5-hour visit, we'll explore its tunnels, bridges, ramps and stairs as we hear all about the history of the capital of the Department of Bolívar.
We'll learn about how the Spanish militants used their underground passages to transport supplies and allow the strategic movements of troops to defend the fortress against potential invaders. Impressive!
