Nature and animal lovers, get ready for an unforgettable experience on this tour of the Fundación Loros. We'll see macaws, parakeets and many more exotic species!
Activity Details
At the indicated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel and head to Villanueva, a town 35 km (21 mi) from Cartagena de Indias. This town is home to the Fundación Loros, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of parrots, macaws and parakeets in Colombia.
The work of this foundation is fundamental to protect these species, many of which are threatened by habitat loss and illegal wildlife trafficking in the country. During this activity, we'll learn first-hand about the exciting process of rehabilitation and subsequent release of these birds.
We'll hear an introductory chat next to the reserve's lake as we enjoy a delicious Colombian breakfast, which will include an arepa, and a drink. After this introduction, we'll help prepare the food and feed some of the recovering birds—a unique moment!
Afterwards, we'll get ready for an exciting 15 km (9.3 mi) route through the trails of the reserve, which comprises 1000 acres (404 hectares) of tropical dry forest. During the route, we'll get to see a great variety of parrots, macaws and other exotic birds. We may even see other animals that live in this area on their own accord, such as monkeys and cows.
At one point during the tour we'll pause to visit the cassava, yam and corn fields, where we'll meet the friendly farmers who work the land and keep alive the agricultural traditions of the region. Here, we'll enjoy a refreshing drink before returning to the starting point.
Finally, we'll conclude the activity by saying goodbye at your hotel after 6 hours in total.
Tour Options
During the booking process, you'll have to choose between 3 options, depending on how you'd prefer to travel along the reserve's trails. The options are on horseback, on a quad bike or in an off-roading vehicle. The itinerary will be the same regardless of the option you choose.
Please take into account that you won't be able to drive the quad bike and the off-roading vehicle, but the guide will do it.
If you prefer horse riding, no previous experience is necessary. However, you must take into account that the maximum weight for this option is 110 kg (242 lbs).
