Take the vertigo-inducing train down the famous Devil's Nose and travel back in time visiting the ruins of Ingapirca, one of the most important examples of Inca architecture in Ecuador, on this day trip from Cuenca.
Ingapirca Ruins Day Trip
After being picked up from your hotel in Cuenca, you'll head north to Alausí, where you'll climb aboard a train on the Trans-Andean Railroad for the dizzying ride to Sibambe. The journey, which lasts around an hour and a half, snakes down the mountain popularly known as the Devil's Nose, zig-zagging back and forward on a descent of 500 metres over the course of 12 kilometres (1640 feet over 7.5 miles).
Having enjoyed the thrill of one of the most famous train routes in the world, your excursion will continue south by highway to Ecuador's largest and best conserved archaeological complex: the ruins of Ingapirca located in the Cañar Valley.
Exploring the site, you'll discover the vestiges of pre-Hispanic societies like the Cañari and the Inca peoples. Ingapirca was an important religious, political, scientific, military and administrative centre for both cultures.
Overlooking the complex from its hilltop location is one of the highlights of Ingapirca: a tower known as the Temple of the Sun which was used for ceremonial and astrological purposes. Follow the trails around the ancient ruins, and you'll reach a hill where you'll see a rock in the shape of a human face, often called the Face of the Inca. Do you think it's a natural formation?
Before the end of your day trip, you'll visit a local museum that showcases a number of objects allowing you to really understand how the Inca and Cañari people lived all those centuries ago.
You'll then make the return journey to Cuenca, where you'll be dropped back off at your hotel.
