Tibet 8 Day Tour
Day 1: Lhasa
Having arrived at Lhasa Airport or the main train station, you'll be picked up and transferred to your hotel, where you'll be left to rest and relax in preparation for your adventure. Lhasa has been the religious and administrative capital of Tibet since the 17th century, making it the ideal place to begin your 8-day tour of this fascinating region.
Day 2: Lhasa
Today, you'll embark on a guided tour of some of Lhasa's most important cultural sites. Visit the Potala Palace, the former residence of the Dalai Lama and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover the history of this important Tibetan site as you explore the museum currently located there.
Continue your route around Lhasa to the Jokhang Temple, a Buddhist temple located in the famous Barkhor Square area of the city. As well as admiring the art and architecture of the sanctuary, including the gilded bronze statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, you'll hear all about the myths and legends surrounding it.
Finally, you'll delve deeper into the Barkhor district, following the pilgrimage walk that thousands of devoted Buddhists take to the Jokhang Temple. Take in the lively atmosphere of pilgrims and locals wandering through the streets.
At the end of the day, you'll enjoy a delicious welcome meal in a typical local restaurant: the perfect introduction to the traditional tastes of Tibet.
Day 3: Lhasa
After a hearty breakfast in your hotel, you'll be ready for a day exploring the "great three gompas", or the three most important Gelug Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. The first stop on your guided tour of these unmissable sanctuaries will be Dreprung Monastery. Founded in the 15th century, this is the largest of all of Tibet's monasteries, and is big enough to house more than 7000 monks.
Next, you'll visit Ganden Monastery. Explore what has been rebuilt of the hilltop complex which, while once able to support up to 5000 Buddhist monks, was completely destroyed by the People's Liberation Army in the 1959 Tibetan Uprising, and by the Red Guard in 1966.
You'll then be taken to Sera Monastery, where you'll have the opportunity to learn more about Buddhism attending a debate between monks.
Day 4: Lhasa – Gyantse – Shigatse
Today, you'll leave Lhasa behind and head to the town of Gyantse. The journey will take you through some of the most spectacular landscapes imaginable. Dramatic mountains overlooking the piercing blue Yamdrok Lake, at a height of 14,570 feet (4,440 metres) above sea level, make for a breathtakingly beautiful image that you'll remember forever.
Arriving in Gyantse, you'll be taken to explore the famous Palcho Monastery, also called Pelkor Chode. Three different Tibetan Buddhist sects share the sacred hilltop complex. Admire the contrast of the white, red and gold architecture against the mountains, the statues of Buddha and the impressive stupa.
After around an hour and a half's drive, you'll reach Shigatse, where you'll spend the night after an intensive day.
Day 5: Shigatse – Rongbuk
Having enjoyed breakfast at your hotel in Shigatse, you'll set off for Lhatse, a small town where you'll make a stop for lunch (not included), before heading on to Shekar. If weather conditions permit, you'll be able to catch your first glimpse of the "Roof of the World", Mount Everest.
Continuing on your approach to the world's tallest mountain, you'll arrive at Rongbuk Monastery. Located in Basum Township, not far from Everest Base Camp, the Buddhist sanctuary is considered to be the highest-elevated monastery in the world.
You'll spend the night in a large tent located at the feet of the incredible Mount Everest, a truly unique location.
Day 6: Rongbuk – Everest Base Camp – Shigatse
Wake up first thing in the morning to make the most of your privileged accommodation watching the sunrise over Mount Everest, an unparalleled image that you'll never forget. You'll then have the awe-inspiring opportunity to climb up to Everest Base Camp: choosing to hike the 2.5 mile (4 km) route or catching a bus instead.
After a memorable morning, you'll make the return journey to Shigatse, where you'll spend the night.
Day 7: Shigatse – Lhasa
After breakfast at your hotel in Shigatse, you'll pay a visit to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, another of Tibet's important historic and cultural sites. The enormous gilt statue of Jampa, the Future Buddha, is just one of many highlights of the sacred site.
Having explored the monastery complex, you'll head back to Lhasa, where you'll stay for the final night of your tour.
