Jack the Ripper Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Trinity Square in Whitechapel, a densely packed working-class district in the east of London, and set off through streets retracing the events of the infamous Autumn of Terror of 1888, when five women were murdered in a series of brutal attacks attributed to the unidentified killer known as Jack the Ripper. Despite countless investigations and theories, the case was never solved.
Our route takes in the actual locations linked to the case. We'll visit Mitre Square, walk down Frying Pan Alley, and pass Christ Church Spitalfields and St Botolph's Without Aldgate. We'll also stop at The Ten Bells, the pub with perhaps the strongest connection of all to the story.
As we walk, our guide will examine the evidence in detail, separating fact from myth. We'll explore the leading suspects and the reasoning behind the most debated theories, while also giving space to the personal stories of the victims themselves and what their lives reveal about London's East End during this harsh and deeply unequal period.
We'll also look at how the case shaped the development of modern policing, changed the way crime was reported in the press, and fuelled a public fascination that has never quite faded. More than a century on, Jack the Ripper continues to appear in books, films, and popular culture.
After around 2 hours, we'll wrap up the tour at Spitalfields Market, near Liverpool Street Station.
