On March 20, 1861, the province of Mendoza experienced the strongest earthquake in its history: a 7.2 on the Richter scale.
After this devastating tragedy, the provincial capital was rebuilt, giving way to wide avenues and spacious squares. What was this redevelopment like? To find out, we’ll meet at Carlos Pellegrini Square, where we’ll begin our free walking tour of Mendoza’s New City.
First, we’ll walk along San Martín and Montevideo avenues, two of Mendoza’s longest boulevards. Do you know how many kilometers they span? After finding out, we’ll head to Plaza de España to admire the Monument to Spanish-Argentine Brotherhood, which stands out for its spectacular frieze.
The route will then continue along España Avenue, where the Premium Tower Suites Hotel is located. Although we won’t be going up to its panoramic rooftop, we’ll talk about this spot, one of Mendoza’s most famous rooftops. We’ll continue our walk through the New City by strolling through the pedestrian zone on Sarmiento Street toward Independence Square, where we’ll see a notable sculpture ensemble.
The next stops will be in front of the former branches of the Hipotecario and Previsión Social banks, two major financial institutions that played a key role in Mendoza’s reconstruction. We’ll discuss them as we head toward San Martín Square, one of the provincial capital’s major hubs.
Finally, after a 2-hour tour, we’ll wrap up the free tour at Pasaje San Martín, one of Mendoza’s most popular shopping galleries. You’ll quickly discover why!
