The Coves dels Hams, a Natural Treasure in Mallorca
Did you think that Mallorca's natural beauty was only on the surface? The island is home to one of the most significant and impressive underground cave systems in Spain. These are the Cuevas Dels Hams, located in Manacor, just 1 kilometer from Porto Cristo. You can't miss them!
Discovered in 1905 by speleologist Pere Caldentey, the Coves dels Hams were formed more than 10 million years ago and are in exceptional condition.
By booking your ticket to the Coves dels Hams, you'll have the chance to explore the unique, branching formations of their stalactites, which grow in a curved shape. Did you know that their name, "hams," means "fishhooks" in Mallorcan?
Throughout your self-guided tour, you'll discover the main areas of the Cuevas Dels Hams:
- The Classic Cave (Cueva Clásica): this is the main attraction of the Coves dels Hams! It consists of 12 galleries filled with stalactites and stalagmites that will leave you completely awestruck. Plus, the Classic Cave is home to the underground lake "Mar de Venecia," where a laser light and classical music show inspired by the Venice Carnival takes place.
- The Round Cave (Cueva Redonda): this is an open space within the Coves dels Hams featuring a spectacular garden teeming with life. The Round Cave is home to bird species native to Mallorca, living in complete freedom.
- The Blue Cave (Cueva Azul): in this area, you'll find an auditorium where you can watch the documentary Discovering the Past, which will tell you all about the formation of the caves and their subsequent discovery. In addition, you can watch the GENESIS show, which narrates the evolution of the universe through an LED lighting system projected onto the rock walls.
The ticket to the Coves dels Hams allows you to explore at your own pace. It's the perfect way to discover this natural wonder, take photos, and enjoy one of Mallorca's top attractions. The visit usually lasts between 1 hour and 1.5 hours.
