Travel to the island of Chiloé and visit one of the most important penguin colonies in Chile. Discover the rich nature of what is also known as Greater Island of Chiloé and discover the ancient city of Ancud.
Chiloe Island and the Penguins of Puñihuil
After collecting you from your hotel in Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt, we will head to the village of Pargua. There, we will take a ferry across to the small village of Chacao on the island of Chiloé, one of the most picturesque parts of Chile.
While we cross the Chacao canal and admire the landscape, we will see sea lions, pelicans and other marine birds which are typical of this region of Chile.
After arriving on Chiloé island, we will head to Ancud, the 2nd largest city on the island. Here, we will visit the Regional Museum and the well-preserved fort of San Antonio, to learn about the Chiloé's colonial history.
After observing the battery of cannons on the fort, we will head to the municipal market, where you will find local handicrafts and foods sourced from both the inland countryside and the sea. You have an hour of your own free time to try some of the delicious local gastronomy at the various food stalls around the market (not included).
Having regained your strength, we will then travel to Puñihuil, a group of rocky islets off the coast of Chiloé. Puñihuil is a protected area where Humbolt and Patagonian penguins gather to breed and raise their chicks. This penguin colony also attracts other species, such as the red-legged cormorant and the kelp gull.
The trip ends back at your hotel in Puerto Varas.
