Discover the contrasts of historic Pushkar and explore its most iconic monuments and temples. Get to know the legends that surround the ancient Rajasthani city on this walking tour. What's more, it's FREE!
According to legend, the Hindu god Brahma dropped a lotus flower into a holy lake to choose the location of a new city, and thus was founded Pushkar, whose name means "blue lotus flower" in Sanskrit. To this day, the Rajasthani city remains a sacred pilgrimage centre for both Hindus and Sikhs. Unearth the mythical stories wrapped around the city on this free walking tour.
Your meeting point will be outside the Gurudwara Sahib, an ornately domed Sikh place of worship. From here, you'll set off towards a historic stone temple, where you can admire elaborate carvings and sculptures, and colourful shrines to Hindu deities.
Next, head to the banks of the Pushkar Lake, where you'll visit a shrine dedicate to Lord Shiva. Built in the 19th century, this has become one of the city's most popular Hindu sanctuaries.
As you stroll alongside the lake, your professional English-speaking guide will explain the significance of the waterside steps known as ghats in Hindu rites and culture. From here, you'll walk over to the Old Rangji Temple, one of the oldest of the over 400 religious buildings that are located in Pushkar. Enjoy its beautiful mixture of Rajputana, Dravidian and Mughal styles of architecture.
Continuing your free walking tour, you'll see how past and present merge together in Pushkar as you explore the city's bustling local market. Experience chaotic daily life in the narrow streets lined with historic buildings and ancient temples. The last stop on your tour will be at the vibrantly colourful Brahma Temple, which dates back to the 14th century and is the city's only shrine dedicated to the Hindu creator-god.
End your tour at Brahma Ghat beside Pushkar Lake.
