Colour and more colour! Discover the chromatic variety of the northern Argentinian mountains with this day trip to Humahuaca and Serranía de Hornocal. You’ll be lost for words!

Humahuaca & Serranía de Hornocal Day Trip

We’ll meet at 7 am on Calle Caseros in Salta. From here, we’ll take a minibus for approximately two hours, and we’ll then arrive at our first stop: the Purmamarca Hill of Seven Colours.

Once there, we’ll take a short walk around this incredible natural site, admiring the wonderful colours. Next, we’ll board the minibus once again and head to Tilcara, half an hour away.

Between 11 and 11:50 am, you’ll have free time to explore the town or, if you prefer, you can go with the guide to the Pucará de Tilcara archaeological site- it’s completely up to you!

We’ll then hit the road once again, heading to the Serranía de Hornocal mountains. We’ll go to the top of the mountain, discovering the area’s dry, rough terrain. If luck is on our side, you’ll get to see Andean camelids; you’ll feel like you’re on a safari!

After we’ve reached a height of over 14,100 feet (4,300 metres), we’ll make our way to a viewpoint to enjoy breathtaking views of the Serranía de Hornocal’s 33 colourful arches. This is simply incredible.

Next, we’ll take the minibus once again, this time to Humuhuaca, where you’ll have two hours of free time to get lunch and explore. You’re completely free to go and see whatever you want to, but we recommend checking out the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria Church and the town hall, as they are wonderful examples of the local architecture.

We’ll then hit the road again, this time stopping at Maimará, where you’ll be able to continue admiring the curious colourful mountains from the Paleta del Pintor viewpoint (meaning painter’s palette, for obvious reasons!). Finally, we’ll make our way make to Salta, arriving between 8:30 and 9 pm.
