Get to know the history of Santarém by visiting walls, military barracks, and churches on a very special tour. You will also enter its cathedral and visit the Diocesan Museum.
Santarem Guided Tour and Cathedral
We will meet up at the time of your choice in the garden of the Republic, in front of the former convent of San Francisco. From here, we will begin a guided tour on foot through the northern part of Santarém, learning all about its important moments from history.
After admiring the gothic-style façade of the Santa Clara Church, we will stroll along the barracks that played an important role in the famous Revolution of the Carnations. Along the way, you will learn all about this crucial military uprising in the history of Portugal.
We then walk to the elegant Town Hall and, at the municipal market, we will see the traditional decorative tiles, many of which date back to the 18th century. Afterward, we will take a trip to even further back in time by visiting the remains of the city walls. It's time to learn all about the city during the Muslim era!
We will then encounter sculpture in honor of Bernardo de Sá Nogueira. We will tell you about why this politician is so well-known you and we will also stop to taste some delicious local sweets.
The icing on the cake will be a visit to the cathedral of Santarém and the Diocesan Museum. More than 150 pieces of amazing art and baroque design await us!
