Chinatown Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
Ready to discover the most exotic neighborhood in Singapore? At the designated time, we'll begin our free tour of Chinatown from Exit B of the Telok Ayer Station.
After a short introduction, we'll head to the Fuk Tak Chi Museum, a small but revealing space that transports us back to the early years of Chinese immigration in Singapore. Through its traditional exterior architecture, we'll understand how the first Chinese communities lived, worked and organised themselves.
We'll continue on to the Thian Hock Keng Temple, one of the oldest Hokkien temples in the country. Dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, this sanctuary is impressive not only for its beauty, but also for having been built without nails.
From there, we'll head to Ann Siang Hill, a historic hill dotted with restored shophouses that now coexist with modern restaurants and bars. The walk will whet our appetite at the Maxwell Food Centre, one of the city's most famous hawker centres. There, those who wish to do so can try different local specialities such as chicken rice or oyster cakes.
We'll continue on to Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, easily recognisable by its colourful gopuram adorned with divine figures. Nearby is Coolie House, a former accommodation for Chinese workers.
Next stop? The Chinatown Heritage Centre, housed in former pagoda houses on Pagoda Street. Here, we'll discover what the immigrants' shared dwellings were like. We'll then walk along Smith Street, where the historic Lai Chun Yuen Opera House stands, a witness to the heyday of Chinese opera.
One of the most striking sections of the tour will take us to Sago Lane, known as "the street of the dead", where the terminally ill were once housed.
Before concluding, we'll stop in front of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, one of Chinatown's great icons. After a 2.5-hour walking tour, we'll conclude this free tour of Singapore's Chinatown neighbourhood at the Chinatown Complex.
