Travel back to Tirana's communist past on this free walking tour of communist Tirana, discovering one of the most important chapters in the city's history.
Tour Details
How could you leave Tirana without learning about its communist era? At the designated time, we'll meet on the steps of the National History Museum in Skanderbeg Square, one of the city's most important spots.
We'll kick off this free tour by heading back to the mid-20th century to learn about the People's Socialist Republic of Albania, which ruled the country from 1946 to 1992. This long period left a deep mark on both Tirana's architecture and character.
We'll start by taking in the details of Skanderbeg Square, presided over by the monument to Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero. From there, we'll walk to the nearby Clock Tower and the Et'hem Bey Mosque, one of the city's most important landmarks.
We'll then leave the square behind to visit BunkArt 2. Did you know it's the largest nuclear bunker in the country? We'll learn all about this site, made up of 36 rooms built during the communist era in case of an attack or invasion.
We'll continue the free tour along Murat Toptani Street, where we'll tell you about the importance of this Albanian poet, artist, and activist in the city's development. Our steps will lead us to Komiteti Kafe Muzeu, where we'll see objects from the dictatorship era. Plus, we'll get to try some rakia!
Next, we'll head to the Postbllok Checkpoint in the Blloku neighborhood, where we'll see the former residence of Enver Hoxha, Albania's former leader. In the final stretch of the tour, we'll visit the House of Leaves and the Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral.
We'll wrap up the tour back at the starting point after 2.5 hours.
