With this ticket to the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, you'll discover how the Habsburg dynasty marked Europe's destiny for almost 650 years. Through a skillful policy of arranged marriages, the dynasty ensured territorial expansion and became very powerful, extending its influence on the royal families of France, Portugal, and Spain.
Since it became the official burial site of the family in 1618, the Capuchin Crypt has witnessed the future of the continent directly—from the Thirty Years' War and the important military victories to the revolutionary movements and the first ideas for a united Europe.
Under the care of the Capuchin friars, this complex has expanded over the course of four centuries to include ten unique chambers, where the remains of 150 historical figures, including 12 emperors and 19 empresses, rest. Among the most visited mausoleums in the crypt are those of the most celebrated figures in Austrian history, such as the unforgettable Empress Sissi, her husband Emperor Franz Joseph I, the monumental double sarcophagus of Empress Maria Theresa, that of Archduke Rudolf, Maximilian I of Mexico, and the remains of Marie Louise, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.
During your visit, you'll marvel at the breathtaking beauty of its sarcophagi, urns, and funerary monuments, designed by the most renowned artists of each era. You'll discover the more human side, with the highs and lows, of the dynasty that shaped the history of Vienna and the world.
The Imperial Crypt is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. Final admission is at 5:30 pm.
