Explore Almeria and discover its legendary history with an expert local guide showing you the historic centre's most iconic monuments.
Guided Walking Tour of Almeria
We'll meet at the selected time in the Puerta de Purchena. This square in the heart of the city centre is the location of the famous Butterfly House.
Next, you'll witness the impact left by the Civil War in the streets and monuments here: see the almost three-mile-long Refugios, concrete tunnels built under the city for use as air-raid shelters during the conflict. Travel back in time as you discover the ancient Aljibes Arabes, the incredibly well-preserved underground cisterns built in the 11th century.
Next, you'll reach the Cathedral of the Incarnation. This impressive architectural masterpiece was originally built as a fortress as well as a place of worship in the 16th century. Plus, you'll see the Virgin of the Sea sanctuary and learn more about both temples.
You'll then go from religious art to fine art at the Escuela de Artes y Oficio art school and afterwards, you'll see the Teatro Cervantes theatre, which is home to numerous legends. Is it true that there are ghosts here?
Less than a five-munites walk away, the Doña Pakita Art Museum is located. We'll enter the museum to see the different Almerian works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
For the finishing touch on your guided tour, enjoy some time to relax in the Parque de Nicolás Salmerón Park, an elegant park located in between the port and the historic centre. Finally, you'll end your tour at the iconic Cable Inglés loading dock, a fascinating example of 20th-century cast-iron architecture built to link the city's port and railway terminal.
This activity is a walking tour around the city of Ameria. You'll see the outside of monuments and find out about their facts and history.
The following spaces will be accessed: Aljibes Árabes, Casa-Museo Doña Pakyta and Escuela de Artes y Oficios (providing the opening times enable this).
