Why Visit the Amsterdam Houseboat Museum?

Moored on the Prinsengracht canal in the Jordaan district, the Houseboat Museum welcomes you as if the canal were opening a secret door into the intimate life of Amsterdam. Welcome aboard!

With your ticket, you’ll step onto the Hendrika Maria, a 1914 cargo ship that, after decades navigating commercial waters, was transformed into a floating home and later into a museum. There, among polished wood and echoes of another era, you’ll uncover a story sustained by the water.

You’ll walk through the living room, filled with a nostalgic 1970s atmosphere, and see how everyday life found its place within the narrow space of the vessel. The skipper’s cabin appears simple and functional, while the kitchen and bedrooms reveal domestic ingenuity and adaptation.

Throughout the visit, you’ll discover the details of living literally on the water. You’ll understand how electricity is supplied, how drinking water is managed, and what happens to wastewater.

At the end of the visit, which lasts approximately 30 minutes, you’ll look at the canal with new eyes. You’ll also understand why houseboats in Amsterdam are a true part of the city’s emotional heritage.
