Set off at the break of dawn to Monserrat, one of Spain’s most important religious sites and discover why Napoleon, Himmler and other historic figures visited Monserrat Abbey in search of the Holy Grail.
Greet your English-speaking guide bright and early at Plaça de Catalunya and sit back on an air-conditioned coach during a one-hour journey to the mountain of Montserrat.
You will arrive just in time to see how the sun rises over Montserrat and marvel at the orange and red glows as the sun climbs higher. Definitely worth waking up early for!
Santa Maria de Monserrat is a Benedictine monastery, a popular pilgrimage site for many centuries. It is also believed that the Holy Grail is kept in this monastery and has driven many historic figures to visit this site in quest for the cup. In 1940, Himmler visited the Abbey convinced he would find it, but left empty handed. Your professional guide will tell you about these fascinating anecdotes while you visit the Monastery and Museum.
Follow your guide into Monserrat Museum and discover why Monserrat has played an important role throughout the centuries. You’ll admire its extraordinary art collection including works of art by Berruguete, Caravaggio, Dalí, Picasso, Luca Giordano, Monet and Degas. The Museum also holds archaeological artefacts from the Middle East.
Next, you’ll visit Montserrat Abbey led by your expert guide. This stunning building is home to beautiful Gothic and Renaissance artwork. One of the Monastery’s highlights is La Moreneta, a twelfth century carving of Our Lady of Montserrat.
After your visit, you’ll finish the tour with a tasting of various liquors from Montserrat.
You’ll be back in central Barcelona between 1pm and 2pm.
