Berlin Third Reich & Cold War Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet in front of the Brandenburg Gate, one of the most powerful symbols in European history. We'll start by uncovering its role across centuries of conflict and triumph, from Prussian military parades to Nazi rallies, Cold War standoffs, and the euphoric reunification of 1989.
From there, we'll make our way to the Reichstag, where a devastating fire in 1933 helped pave the way for Hitler's rise to power. We'll explore how this iconic building survived war, division, and decades of abandonment before emerging as the home of modern German democracy.
At the Soviet War Memorial in Tiergarten, we'll pause to reflect on the tens of thousands of Red Army soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Berlin. Nearby, we'll visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a deeply moving tribute to the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
We'll then stand above the site of the Führerbunker, where the Nazi regime spent its final days, and pass by the former Ministry of Aviation, once Hermann Göring's domain and later a symbol of East Germany's founding. A short walk brings us to the Topography of Terror, built on the grounds of the former SS and Gestapo headquarters, where the machinery of Nazi terror was orchestrated.
Walking alongside a preserved stretch of the Berlin Wall, we'll hear remarkable stories of escape attempts and the human cost of a city torn in two. The tour wraps up at Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin, where Cold War tensions once brought American and Soviet tanks within meters of each other.
Finally, we'll wrap up the tour and say our goodbyes at this last point after a total of 2 hours together.
