Laguna Torre Hike
Did you know that El Chaltén is considered the National Capital of Trekking in Argentina? To find out why, we will meet up at 9 a.m at the San Martín Lake Office and begin our 5.5-mile trekking route to the beautiful Laguna Torre lake.
We'll first cross an area of Antarctic beech woodland, gradually gaining height until arriving at the Margarita Waterfall viewpoint. From here, you will have fantastic views of the canyon created by the Fitz Roy River as it cuts through the mountains.
We will continue walking up the mountain towards another viewpoint which provides a fantastic panorama of the iconic Cerro Torre. The massif you can see from here is the second highest mountain in the Glaciers National Park. At just over 10,000 feet it is surpassed only by Mount Fitz Roy. We stop here to rest for a few minutes and admire the magnificent mountains and glaciers which surround us on all sides.
Laguna Torre is reached via a wonderful two-hour walk during which you may spot some of the amazing bird species native to this region, such as the Magellanic woodpecker. Once we arrive at the lake you will witness the magnificent ice tongues which project out into the icy cold waters. Here, you will have your own free time to take as many pictures as you want.
After regaining our strength with a lakeside picnic, we will walk back to the starting point. The excursion will end between 4 pm and 5 pm, depending on the speed of the particular group.
