Galveston Boat Ride
Activity Details
At the scheduled time, we’ll meet at Pier 21, in the historic seaport of Galveston, and begin a boat ride that will allow us to explore the history of this island city from the waters of the Gulf of Texas. All aboard!
Once underway, we’ll sail slowly through the port of Galveston, a place that for centuries served as a gateway to the city. From the deck, we’ll see historic piers and large ships that recall a past of commerce and refuge, when Galveston became known for welcoming thousands of immigrants.
During the ride, we’ll share stories of pirates and privateers. These tales will feature Jean Lafitte, a slave trader who turned these shores into a setting for intrigue and smuggling. We’ll also revisit one of the most decisive events in local history: the devastating hurricane of 1900, which forever transformed the island’s urban layout and resilient spirit.
We’ll also learn about the contrast between the port’s past and present. Active shipyards, modern navigation routes, and the intense port activity today reflect the legacy of the oil boom and maritime trade of the 20th century.
Finally, after a 45-minute boat ride, we’ll return to the starting point. See you next time!
