On this ice climbing adventure on the Matanuska Glacier, we'll scale walls up to 15 m (49 ft) high and climb crevasses in one of Alaska’s most dynamic landscapes. It will be unforgettable!

Activity Details

After meeting at 38100 Glenn Highway, we’ll prepare for the activity with a safety briefing and by handing out the necessary equipment.

We'll drive for about 15 minutes to the start of the trail that leads to the Matanuska Glacier. Ready for the adventure that awaits us?

Upon reaching the climbing area, we'll face ice walls reaching 15 m (49 ft) in height, ideal for beginners. We'll use a top-rope system that will allow us to climb in complete safety whilst learning the fundamental techniques of vertical progression on glacial ice.

We’ll plant our ice axes, fasten our crampons and make our way across surfaces sculpted by cycles of melting and refreezing. During the experience, we'll also discuss the cryogenic ecosystem that thrives in this seemingly inhospitable environment.

We'll also venture into areas of wide crevasses. There, we'll be able to observe the inner workings of the Matanuska Glacier, where the different layers of stratified ice are visible. Did you know that these crevasses can be dozens of meters deep?

When hunger strikes, we'll take a break to rest in this setting and refuel with the food you've brought along.

After the expedition, we’ll make our way back to the vehicle and return to the original meeting point, where we’ll say our goodbyes after a total of 8 hours of adventure in the wilds of Alaska.
