Basilica of San Juan de Dios in Granada

In the heart of Granada, very close to the former area linked to the Hospitaller Order, stands the Basilica of San Juan de Dios, built in Andalusian Baroque style. Construction began in 1737 under the direction of Fray Alonso de Jesús y Ortega and continued until 1759. It was conceived not only as a temple, but also as a space for the theological exaltation of charity.

With your tickets to the Basilica of San Juan de Dios, you’ll first access the main area. There, you’ll admire its decoration with colored marble, gold leaf, and altarpieces of great iconographic complexity. In every corner, you’ll find detailed information thanks to the included audio guide in English.

The main altar, shaped like a lit candle, is one of the most unique elements of the entire complex. Did you know this structure symbolizes Christ as the light of the world and Saint John of God as the bearer of the flame of charity? You’ll also be able to explore the side chapels, including the Chapel of Saint Raphael and the Chapel of Christ of the Sorrows.

The altarpiece, created by Francisco José Guerrero, is also noteworthy, as is the camarín, the spiritual core of the temple. This richly decorated space, adorned with marble, agate, and mirrors, houses the relics of Saint John of God.

Finally, you can visit the sacristy, known as Porta Coeli. There, you’ll find paintings by Bocanegra and exquisite ceramic tilework from Triana, completing a visit that brings together architecture, art, and spirituality in a fully Baroque expression.

Virtual Reality Experience

The ticket includes an immersive experience that complements the visit. Using virtual reality headsets, you’ll access a 4-minute 360º recreation that allows you to explore the interior of the temple and view its spaces from unique perspectives.

Through high-tech imagery, you’ll virtually explore the nave, dome, frescoes, and main altarpiece from angles that are otherwise impossible, even reaching areas that are difficult or inaccessible to the public.
