Museum Details

Opened in 1969, the Mummy Museum is one of the most unique places in Guanajuato. Its collection, one of the world’s finest of its kind, houses a large exhibition of naturally mummified human bodies that were exhumed from the old Santa Paula Cemetery.

Unlike the mummies of Ancient Egypt, whose bodies were embalmed and treated with various methods, the mummies of Guanajuato were preserved naturally due to the conditions of the soil and the environment.

With this ticket to the Guanajuato Mummy Museum, you can explore its permanent collection at your own pace. The collection comprises around a hundred mummified human bodies, belonging to people who lived mainly during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Among the museum’s most notable exhibits are the following:

The mummy of Remigio Leroy: this was the first body to be exhumed in 1865. He was a French doctor whose grave had not been paid for, which led to his exhumation and the subsequent discovery of the mummification phenomenon.
The world’s smallest mummy: that of a mummified foetus at approximately 24 weeks’ gestation, preserved alongside its mother.
Bodies in their original clothing: several remains still bear the clothes, footwear, lace or shrouds in which they were buried in the 19th and 20th centuries.

In addition, the museum houses several audiovisual rooms. These spaces explain the socio-historical context of the Santa Paula Cemetery, the geological process that enabled mummification, and the anthropomorphic significance of the collection.
