What were the mines in Brazil like during the colonial period? To find out, we’ll meet at the entrance to the Grande Mina Central. Before venturing into its tunnels, we’ll provide an introduction to the historical context of the gold rush, a key period for understanding the growth of Ouro Preto and its role in Brazil’s economy.
We’ll start by discussing gold mining in Minas Gerais. Did you know that Ouro Preto became one of the main mining centers during the Portuguese colonial era? This wealth transformed the city into a monumental urban center, with Baroque churches, stately mansions, and a bustling commercial activity linked to gold.
Next, we’ll begin our descent into the mine, which features over 600 meters of tunnels open to the public. We’ll explore some of these underground galleries that still use traditional mining methods, with passageways carved directly into the rock. Strategic lighting will allow us to observe the texture of the walls, the mineral veins, and the irregularities of the terrain.
During a 30- to 40-minute tour, we’ll make our way through this underground labyrinth while explaining how gold was mined in the 18th century, what tools were used, and what the workers’ daily routine was like. Many of Ouro Preto’s mines were excavated by hand, using rudimentary techniques and under extremely difficult conditions. We’ll also see rock formations and remnants of gold veins, which will help us understand the mineral composition of the area.
When we exit the mine, you’ll have time to take photos of the surroundings and stop by the gift shop.
