The Monastery of Leyre and Javier Castle Day Trip
Day Trip Details
After meeting at the Pamplona bus station, we’ll set off on a 40-minute drive into the heart of the Navarran Pre-Pyrenees. Ready to fall in love with the scenery?
Along the way, we’ll make a brief stop at a natural overlook with views of the Yesa Reservoir. There, we’ll admire this 20th-century hydraulic structure built on the Aragón River. The first photo opportunity of the trip!
We’ll continue to the Monastery of San Salvador de Leyre, one of the oldest monastic complexes in Navarre. Once there, we’ll take a 45-minute guided tour, visiting its Romanesque crypt, a space of great architectural simplicity characterized by its sturdy pillars and semicircular arches.
Next, we’ll stop at the Porta Speciosa, a 12th-century portal richly decorated with sculptural reliefs depicting biblical themes. Did you know that the remains of the first kings of Navarre are interred in this monastery? Afterward, we’ll enter the abbey church, where we’ll examine its stylistic evolution and its role within Benedictine monastic life.
The tour will continue to Javier Castle, which is just a 20-minute drive away. This medieval fortress features defensive elements such as towers, battlements, and a system of walls adapted to the terrain.
During this 45-minute tour, we’ll explore the castle’s various rooms, learn about St. Francis Xavier, and discover how this stronghold was partially destroyed in the 16th century by order of the Crown of Castile. What were the reasons? Which parts were demolished?
Finally, we’ll give you 1 hour of free time to rest and have lunch before heading back to Pamplona. We’ll say our goodbyes at the original meeting point after 5 hours.
