Bhutan Tour: 5 Days
Day 1: Arrival in Bhutan - Thimphu
On the day of your arrival, after meeting the guide at Paro airport we'll drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Our first stop will be the Tamchlog Lhakhang Temple. To get there we'll cross one of the most beautiful and impressive chain bridges in the country.
Next, we'll visit one of the best-known places in Thimphu, the Tashichoe Dzong. This medieval fortress houses most of the government offices and the King's throne room. Depending on the time of arrival of the flight, we'll make more or fewer visits, all included in the price.
Day 2: Thimphu - Punakha
After having breakfast at the hotel, the day will begin by visiting the Chorten Memorial Stupa, built in honour of the third king of Bhutan, and Changangkha Monastery. Did you know that newborns are brought here to be named? We'll discover this curious tradition as we admire its architecture.
We'll also go to the impressive Buddha Dordenma statue, which is famous for its enormous bronze wingspan and houses up to 125,000 miniature statues of Buddha. Depending on the time of day and day of the week we can make other visits, such as the local market (open only from Thursday to Sunday).
Then we'll leave Thimphu to go to Punakha. We'll cross the Dochula Pass, a mountain pass measuring than 3000 metres (9800 feet) of altitude crowned by 108 stupas, and after two hours of walking, we'll reach the city.
Day 3: Punakha - Paro
Once we've had breakfast, we'll start discovering the valley. First, we'll stop at Chhimi Lhakhang, the temple of fertility. We'll walk through the rice fields to access this temple, one of the holiest in all of Bhutan.
Next, we'll visit the Punakha Dzong, Bhutan's monastery fortress par excellence and one of the most representative symbols of the country's architecture. We'll learn about its history and the reasons that make it so special.
Finally, we'll travel three and a half hours to Paro.
Day 4: Paro
On this day, we'll tour the most important points around Paro including the Taktshang Monastery, also known as the Tiger's Nest. This monastery stands on a cliff which is 900 meters (2900 feet) above the city, where we'll enjoy unforgettable views.
We'll climb up to the Tiger's Nest on a 2 to 3 hour hike, an effort that will be worthwhile when we reach the top and visit all the temples in the complex. Next, we'll return to Paro, where you'll have free time to explore the city at your leisure. If you like, you can tour the historic centre.
