Discover Cambodia's cultural heritage exploring the intricately-decorated stupas, pagodas and temples of Phnom Baset and Udong. Learn about their history as you admire views over the surrounding countryside on this day trip from Phnom Penh.

Phnom Baset & Udong Day Trip Itinerary

On the morning of your tour, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Phnom Penh and you'll set off to the hilltop temple complex of Phnom Baset, located 18 miles (30 km) to the northeast of the Cambodian capital. During your journey by comfortable air-conditioned bus, you'll make a stop in a village inhabited by Cham Muslim people.

After learning all about Cham traditions and culture, you'll continue on your route to Phnom Baset. Atop a hill surrounded by rolling green plains and rice paddies, the historic Buddhist buildings are breath-takingly beautiful. You'll be left speechless at the sight of the 8th century Pre-Angkorian temple and the Phnom Baset pagoda, where you'll find the famous reclining Buddha.

From Phnom Baset hill, you'll head back on your route in the direction of Udong, or Oudong, a former capital of Cambodia whose name means "Victorious". First on your agenda at the World Heritage Site will be taking a break with a typical picnic lunch. With renewed energy, you'll then begin your afternoon visiting the town's many different temples.

Udong is home to three large stupas, where the ashes of three of the country's great kings have been preserved. Admire the incredible detail in which these stupas are decorated while your guide reveals interesting facts about their history. You'll also have the opportunity to visit Vihear Preah Ath Roes, the site of an enormous Buddha statue that, despite being almost completely destroyed by the Khmer Rouge in a 1977 explosion, is still one of the monumental highlights of the ancient town.

Finally, you'll make your way back to Phnom Penh, stopping along the way in Kompong Luong to learn all about the locals' traditional handicrafts and admire the unique objects made here.
