Harry Potter Free Tour

  • 1,649 reviews | 29,663 travellers
It was a pleasure to explore Porto's must-see places from a magical perspective. Not only in terms of the saga itself, but also in the (sometimes very subtle) details where a certain inspiration can be seen. After all, the creation of a magical world was based on the author's experiences, and Porto has a lot of magic surrounding it. Many thanks to our guide, Federico, for the wonderful experience and all the additional information.

On this Harry Potter free tour of Porto, we'll uncover some of the secrets behind J.K. Rowling's magical saga that has captivated an entire generation.

Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll meet at a central point in the city to kick off a truly magical free tour of Porto. Can you guess which world-famous author used the city as a source of inspiration? Let's find out!

One of our stops will take us to Café Majestic, the very café where J.K. Rowling came almost every day to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. From there, we'll head to São Bento station, where we'll admire its famous azulejo tile decoration along the platforms. Did you know that the author drew inspiration from this spot for Platform 9¾? The resemblance will surprise you!

Next, we'll pass by the Clérigos Tower in the city's old town. Remember the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts? We'll discuss how the novelist may have been inspired by this landmark when describing it.

We'll then stop in front of the Palace of Justice to learn about António de Oliveira Salazar. Could this figure have inspired the creation of Slytherin house and the name of its feared founder? There are many theories on the subject.

Along the way, we'll also stop at the Fountain of Lions, which bears a striking resemblance to the Gryffindor house emblem, and visit the Casa Escondida (Twin Churches), where we'll reflect on 12 Grimmauld Place.

We'll then make our way to the University of Porto, where we'll spot 7 emblems of Portuguese culture — the same number as Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes!

Of course, no Harry Potter tour of Porto would be complete without a stop at the iconic Livraria Lello, world-famous thanks to its connection to the wizarding world. We'll share the popular beliefs surrounding this magical bookshop while admiring its stunning facade.

After 2 hours of exploring, we'll wrap up this Harry Potter free tour, having uncovered the key connections between Porto and the magical universe.
