11,000 feet high in the middle of the Andean plateau, between the provinces of Salta and Jujuy, lies the Salinas Grandes salt flat. The magnificent 'white desert' will leave you awestruck!
Salinas Grandes Day Trip Itinerary
Early in the morning, you'll be collected from your hotel in Salta before heading out into the Andean highlands, through landscapes marked by the viaducts and bridges over which the famous Tren a las Nubes - the Train to the Clouds - crosses. Cruising down Route 51, you'll make a stop at the town of Campo Quijano, home to an ancient steam locomotive from the iconic railway. Continue on your journey across the Quebrada del Toro gorge, whose spectacular natural scenery will leave you speechless.
You'll then reach Santa Rosa de Tastil, a tiny settlement near the ruins of the ancient indigenous town of Tastil, before arriving in San Antonio de los Cobres. In this small town - which has one of the highest elevations of any municipality in Argentina, you'll have free time to enjoy lunch (not included). After eating, you'll set off on Route 40 towards Salinas Grandes, the third largest salt flats in South America. The sight of them is breath-taking: the white plains of sodium chloride mix with shades of turquoise and brown, creating an incredible chromatic set. This 'white desert', located at over 11,000 feet (3450 m) above sea level, is one of the most fascinating natural wonders in northern Argentina.
Returning south, you'll make a stop at the Cuesta del Lipan, whose highest point soars above you at almost 13,700 feet (4170 m) above sea level. Descend the sloping road towards the historic town of Purmamarca, where you'll see the famous Hill of the Seven Colours. After admiring the awe-inspiring natural phenomenon and exploring the traditional handicrafts market in Purmamarca, you'll head back on the return journey to Salta.
- We will be ascending to an altitude of around 13,000 feet above sea level. People with health problems should consult their doctor before taking their holiday.
- We recommend you bring bottles of water to hydrate yourself and sun protection to avoid burns.
