Excellent tour. José is an expert historian, his explanations and teachings were precise and clear, and he was extremely kind. Absolutely recommended.

Tour Details

We'll meet at the indicated time in front of the Santo Cristo de la Salud Chapel, where we'll review the history of Puerto Rico under Spanish rule.

We'll start by heading to the Plaza de Armas, the civil centre of the walled city. There, we'll see its buildings while we talk about how this was the meeting point and place for public discussion. We'll immerse ourselves in the urban layout of the 16th century, where we'll evoke moments of power, resistance and cultural struggle.

From there, we'll descend to the iconic Puerta de San Juan, the main entrance to the city during the colonial era. Painted vermilion red, this entrance not only protected the city, but was also erected as the border of the Spanish enclave at that time. As we cross it, we'll feel the symbolic weight of the footsteps of thousands of proud sailors, merchants and governors.

The free tour will take us to the Cathedral of San Juan, one of the oldest temples on Calle del Cristo Street. We'll admire its Gothic architecture and resplendent stained-glass windows. Did you know that the remains of the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León rest within its walls?

We'll set off through the narrow streets of Old San Juan and reach the Bastion of Las Palmas, another bastion that forms part of the city's defensive system. Upon arrival, we'll stop to talk about how the town was shaped by battles against pirates, empires and time itself.

Lastly, we'll go in search of the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, an architectural gem and strategic point par excellence in the history of San Juan. From the outside, we'll admire its great walls, contrasting with the blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

Finally, we'll say goodbye at this last point after a 2-hour-long free tour.
