Discover the majestic volcanic landscapes of Piedras Rojas (Red Stones), situated in the heart of the Chilean altiplano. On this tour, you will also visit the Atacama salt flat and mountain lagoons located at more than 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level.
Piedras Rojas, Salar de Atacama, and the Altiplano Lakes Trip
After meeting up in the center of San Pedro de Atacama, we will head deep into the Atacama desert to the Chaxa Lagoon. This spectacular area, home to a series of shallow reflective pools, is a favorite feeding ground for Flamingos. You will see these magnificent birds up close in their natural habitat.
Then we will take you to the Piedras Rojas (Red Stones) viewpoint, one of the most beautiful spots in all of Chile. Here, the oxidation of iron in the altiplano rocks has created a surreal, scarlet toned landscape which seems to belong to a different planet.
We then travel to our next destination, the high plain lagoons of Miscanti and Miñiques, located at more than 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) above sea level among huge Andean volcanoes. We will take a stroll along the shores of these twin lakes which were separated by the lava and ash from a volcanic eruption.
The last stage of the tour will take us to Toconao, an indigenous village characterized by traditional adobe buildings. During our visit, you will hear all about the history and traditions of this remote community. You will also see the church of San Lucas and its pretty bell tower which dates back to the 1700s.
Our trip finishes back at San Pedro de Atacama at around 6.30 pm
Please bear in mind that the trip does not include the admission fee for the Los Flamencos National Reserve, which costs CL$ 8 (US$ 0).
It is currently prohibited to visit the Piedras Rojas area for reasons of conservation. Until the ban is lifted, our tour will instead visit a lookout of the area from which you will have fantastic panoramic views.
