This trip to the Valle del Arcoíris (Rainbow Valley) will take you to one of the most fascinating places in all of Chile. You will walk among colorful mountain rocks and discover ancient Petroglyph inscriptions.
Valle del Arcoíris
After collecting you from the center of San Pedro de Atacama, we will head south towards the foothills of the Cordillera Domeyko mountain range. During the journey, you will admire wonderful desert landscapes and the huge peaks of the Andes.
Our first stop is the archeological site of Yerbas Buenas, where you will witness the famous collection of ancient rock art from the different cultures which inhabited the region. We will walk through the pre-Colombian site and view the petroglyphs which have been carved onto the rock using sharp stone tools and which depict animals, scenes of daily life, and even constellations of the stars.
Next, we will head to the Valle del Arcoiris (Rainbow Valley), and see the wonderful colored rocks which gave the area its name. You will also encounter in close detail some of the minerals which give the rocks their distinctive colors. The Rainbow Valley also has unusual rock formations which have been eroded and shaped by the wind over millions of years.
We will finish the trip at an impressive viewpoint from which you will have spectacular views across the valley while enjoying a snack.
After learning all about the history of this remote corner of the planet and its inhabitants, we will return to the San Pedro de Atacama. We will arrive back at the initial starting point of the tour at around 1:30 pm.
