We’ll meet at the Seward Highway facilities to kick off an exciting day of high-mountain hiking. After a brief introductory talk and a review of the safety guidelines for the trail, we’ll lace up our boots and gear up to begin the hike. Ready, adventurers?
This hiking route through the Harding Icefield will take us on an exploration of Alaska’s rich biodiversity across a varied landscape. We’ll begin by hiking through lush coastal forests and green alpine meadows that, depending on the time of year, are tinged with the colors of the native flora.
As we gain elevation and climb the steep mountain slopes, the forested landscape will give way to rocky and snowy terrain. Along the way, the guide will share interesting details about the geology, history, and delicate ecology of this Arctic environment.
We’ll also keep our eyes peeled for the region's native wildlife, such as mountain goats, marmots, and even black bears that inhabit the area around the trail.
The highlight of the activity will come when we reach the lookouts that overlook the Harding Icefield.
A majestic, endless expanse of ice and glaciers will unfold before our eyes, leaving you completely breathless. Did you know it covers an area of 483 km² (186 mi²)? And that it’s one of only 4 remaining icefields in the United States? Without a doubt, a true spectacle of nature in its purest form.
After taking in this breathtaking landscape, we’ll begin our descent along the same trail, enjoying a different perspective of the Kenai valleys.
Finally, we’ll wrap up the hike by returning to the starting point after about 8 hours of pure adventure. See you soon!
