Experience a new side of Shanghai, exploring the quaint streets and historical buildings of the city's French Concession and learning all about its captivating past on this free walking tour.

Free Walking Tour of Shanghai French Concession

Begin your guided walking tour of the Shanghai French Concession next to the South Shaanxi Road metro station. From here, you'll stroll down the popular shopping street of Middle Huaihai Road. Once called Avenue Joffre in honour of the French general, this iconic street is now home to many luxury boutiques, as well as the legendary Cathay Theatre. Admire its Art Deco façade while you hear all about its fascinating history.

You'll pass the former French Club, where your guide will reveal some curious facts surrounding the building, before continuing your route through this historical area of Shanghai. Your next stop will be Culture Square, near to which you'll find the former residence of Zhou Enlai, the first Prime Minister of the People's Republic of China, and the Sinan Mansions. The buildings' French-style architecture will surprise you, especially in contrast with surrounding contemporary façades.

Next to the mansions, you'll discover a building you may not have expected to see in this area of China: the Catholic St Peters Church. Your free walking tour of Shanghai's French Concession will end next to the Dapuqiao metro station in the Tianzifang district. This neighbourhood has a distinctly European feel, and its winding streets are filled with numerous shops, bars, cafes and restaurants where you can explore, buy souvenirs and renew your energy with a traditional bite to eat (not included) after your tour.
