With this free tour of Skopje, you'll discover the history and facts about the capital of Macedonia. Did you know this is the birthplace of Mother Teresa of Calcutta?

Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll meet in front of the Hotel Marriott, in the city's main square. Once we're all gathered, we'll begin this free tour of Skopje. Let's go!

At our meeting point, we'll stop at the statue of Alexander the Great, which is 72 feet (22 meters) tall and weighs 40 tons. We'll tell you the story behind this equestrian sculpture and the controversy with Greece that gave way to its construction, since Athens claims that the warrior is part of its historical heritage.

From there, we'll walk along a pedestrian street until we reach the Mother Teresa Memorial House, which was inaugurated in 2009 to honor Teresa of Calcutta, a Nobel Prize winner who was born in Skopje in 1910. Inside this home, there is a gallery with photos of her childhood and a sculpture of her and her family.

We'll continue the tour of the capital of Macedonia by admiring the Modernist-style buildings that were erected during the reconstruction of Skopje after the devastating earthquake of 1963. These cement buildings were designed by the Japanese architect Kenzō Tange.

Then, we'll continue learning about the city's past by seeing other renowned sites, such as the VMRO Square, the Italian and Spanish embassies, and the Old Bazaar. This last spot is located on the eastern shores of the Vardar River, which still preserves Byzantine architecture, although it's predominantly Ottoman architecture.

To wrap up our tour on a high note, we'll admire the Skopje Fortress, the highest point in the city. From there, we'll enjoy the beautiful scenic views. It's the best moment to take pictures!

Finally, we'll conclude our free tour at the starting point 1 hour and 45 minutes later.
