Angels Landing Hiking
Activity Details
At the indicated time, we’ll meet at the south pedestrian entrance of Zion National Park to begin this hiking experience toward one of the park’s most iconic viewpoints: Angels Landing.
After a safety briefing, we’ll board a minibus and take a 20-minute drive to The Grotto. From there, we’ll begin the 8.7 km (5.4 mi) hike. The adventure starts along the West Rim Trail.
We’ll first enter the impressive Refrigerator Canyon. This narrow gorge, carved by erosion, maintains a noticeably cooler microclimate than the rest of the park. It’s surrounded by sandstone walls over 600 m (1,969 ft) high.
Next, we’ll tackle Walter’s Wiggles, a series of 21 switchbacks designed in the 1920s by engineers from the Civilian Conservation Corps to make the ascent easier on this steep terrain. This section will lead us to Scout Lookout, where we’ll see xerophytic vegetation such as pinyon pine and sagebrush.
From here, we’ll begin the challenging final stretch to Angels Landing. This is a narrow ridge equipped with steel chains that will allow us to climb safely along steep drop-offs. The summit will reward us with breathtaking views!
After reaching the top and enjoying the views over the Virgin River canyon, we’ll begin the descent back to The Grotto, where you can continue exploring Zion on your own or return to the visitor center.
The total duration of the experience will be between 5 and 6 hours.
