Come explore one of Tokyo's most historic and lively neighborhoods on this free walking tour of Ueno. You'll stroll through peaceful temples, colorful shrine paths, and the bustling Ameyoko Market for the perfect mix of traditional Japanese culture, street food, and classic Tokyo vibes!

Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll meet in front of JR Ueno Station and set off to explore one of Tokyo's most fascinating neighborhoods on foot.

Our first stop is Kiyomizu Kannon-do Temple, the oldest surviving structure in Ueno Park. Dating back to 1631, this stunning building was modeled after Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera and features the same dramatic "stage-style" architecture, with its main hall jutting out over the hillside.

Next, we'll wander over to Hanazono Inari Shrine, where a tunnel of vibrant red torii gates creates a scene that feels like it belongs in Kyoto rather than central Tokyo. It's one of those spots that most visitors walk right past without ever knowing it's there.

We'll then visit Toshogu Shrine, an Edo-period gem dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Its richly gilded gate, detailed carvings, and a long approach flanked by rows of stone and bronze lanterns make it one of Ueno Park's most impressive sights.

To round things off, we'll dive into Ameyoko Shopping Street, a buzzing open-air market that stretches between Ueno and Okachimachi stations. It was originally a post-war black market, and its name is short for "Ameya Yokocho," meaning "candy store alley," though some say the "Ame" nods to the American goods once sold here. It's now home to over 400 shops selling everything from fresh seafood and exotic fruit to cosmetics, clothing, and souvenirs at some of the best prices in Tokyo.

After 2 hours, we'll wrap up the tour back at the starting point and say our goodbyes.
