Welcome to the capital of Tunisia! At the designated time, we'll begin this free tour of Tunis in front of the Théâtre municipal de Tunis, an Art Nouveau-style building located on the central Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
In this boulevard, known as the Champs Elysées of Tunis, we'll see buildings from the Colonial French period, modern cafés, and the iconic Clock Tower. At the end of this avenue, you'll find the Independence Square, where you'll admire the statue of Ibn Khaldoun, one of the founding fathers of sociology.
In front of this sculpture, we'll observe the facade of the Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul, the largest Catholic cathedral in Tunis. After learning about its history, we'll continue our tour toward the Central Market, where we'll see the main stands of spices and fresh products.
Then, we'll head to the Medina of Tunis, which we'll enter through the Bab al-Bhar Door. After crossing this door, also known as the Porte De France (the gate of France), we'll stroll along the narrow and picturesque streets of the Medina, declared a World Heritage Site.
We'll then pass the Souk El Attarine, known for its perfumes and spices, and the Souk El Berka, which stands out for its jewelry. Our tour will continue in the heart of the Medina, the Al-Zaytuna Mosque, also known as El-Zituna Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in northern Africa. We'll see this mosque from the outside and stop at a café, where you can enjoy a drink at your own pace.
Lastly, we'll pass several madrasas, which are Islamic schools, and conclude this free walking tour of Tunis at the Kasbah Square after 2 hours and 45 minutes. Here, you'll see the exterior of the Dar El Bey, known as the government's palace, and the Kasbah Mosque.
