Immerse yourself in the fascinating indigenous communities of Mexico on this tour of San Juan Chamula and San Lorenzo Zinacantán. Discover tradition, culture and religion as you explore the vibrant historic towns.
San Juan Chamula & Zinacantán Tour
Having been picked up from your hotel in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, you'll set off for San Juan Chamula, an autonomous town located in the Chiapas highlands and home to an indigenous community who have managed to retain much of their pre-Hispanic culture and tradition.
You'll have the opportunity to enter the famous San Juan Bautista temple of San Juan Chamula. Built as a church dedicated to John the Baptist, the building is an intriguing example of religious syncretism, which you'll discover as you find yourself in the dark, misty room and see the Catholic icons dressed in traditional local dress and the otherwise empty floor carpeted in pine needles. A truly unique experience!
Leaving San Juan Chamula behind, the next stop on your tour will be another small indigenous town called San Lorenzo Zinacantán. Visit the San Lorenzo Church and admire the bright colours of the flowers and the locals' clothes in contrast with the whitewashed building.
One the highlights of your day trip will surely be your visit to a local family's house, where you'll be invited to taste a typical homemade liquor before learning all about the handweaving craftwork of the women, who make beautifully unique textiles.
At the end of the day, you'll have free time to explore the artisanal markets and to visit the town's churches at your own pace, before returning to the centre of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
Please respect the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and San Lorenzo Zinacantán and do not take photos of people or inside the churches.
