Rome Catacombs Tour & Appian Way
Rome Catacombs Tour & Appian Way
Greet your guide near the San Giovanni Metro Station in Piazzale Appio at 10 am and climb on board an air-conditioned coach and depart with a small-group to the Basilica of St Sebastian.
Upon arrival, make your way into the St Sebastian Basilica, where you can see the final work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini - his sculpture "Salvator Mundi". Then we continue along the Appian Way, considered the first “highway” in Europe. And you’ll also marvel at one of the aqueducts that still supplies water to this day.
Then we'll explore the Roman imperial villa Villa di Massenzio and the ancient Circus of Maxentius stadium and the Mausoleo di Romolo Mausoleum contained within the complex.
Then the tour heads underground, to visit he catacombs underneath Rome. These subterranean burial sites offer a different perspective on the history of Rome, through its funeral rights and the wealth of early Christian art contained within. The tour normally visits the San Calisto catacombs and the San Sebastian catacombs on Wednesdays, although on occasions the tour may visit the Santa Domitilla catacombs.
Then you'll hop back into the climate-controlled coach and head back to Rome, where you will be dropped off in the city centre.
